Advanced Academic Programs(AP/CCP)

Ohio law requires all state public high schools to provide students with Advanced Academic Programs. These are designed to allow students the opportunity to earn college credit toward a degree or career certification during their high school years. The Logan-Hocking School District offers two separate forms of Advanced Academic programs at Logan High School: College Credit Plus (CCP) and Advanced Placement (AP).

Both programs offer students a challenging curriculum, with the skills and knowledge that will be of benefit to students intending to pursue post-secondary education. The district offers both of these options to advocate for individual student needs, goals, and flexibility and does not endorse one program over the other.

You can find out more about these programs by navigating to each specific webpage and/or talking with your student's school counselor at Logan High School. 740.385.2069 extension 3.

Advanced Placement (AP)

Advanced Placement (AP) Courses:

The AP curriculum, administered by The College Board, consists of standardized high school courses that are roughly equivalent to undergraduate college courses. After completing an AP class, students will take the AP exam in that subject, which can earn them credits and accelerated placement in college. Since AP courses give you the opportunity to get your hands on real college-level work while still in high school, you'll get a great idea of what to expect when you move onto the next phase of your educational journey. The increased rigors of AP courses will not only give your mind a workout, they will help you polish up your time management and study skills, which, given the pressures of undergraduate life, will become an invaluable ally.

Why Take an AP Course?

  • Be challenged. Advanced Placement classes are rigorous and demanding, offering an intellectual stimulation that students won’t get in regular high school courses.

  • Improve college admissions chances. AP classes will raise the “wow” factor of a student’s high school record. If a student does well in an AP class, it’s a signal to admissions counselors that he or she is ready for the pressures of college study.

  • Arrive at college better prepared. AP classes sharpen students’ writing skills, teach them how to think critically, and improve their problem-solving abilities. AP students learn to navigate the academic expectations they’ll encounter in college courses.

  • Earn college credit. AP exams are scored on a scale of 1 (lowest) through 5 (highest). If a student earns a 3 or higher, he or she can receive course credits, advanced placement, or both upon arriving at college. AP policies vary from school to school, but the majority of colleges in the U.S. (as well as colleges and universities in 40 other countries) grant credit and/or accelerated placement for AP exams.

How Much Does it Cost?

AP courses are free, but the required AP exam cost $98* each. Exam fee reductions are available for students and families that meet guidelines. The AP Exams are administered nationally on the first 2 weeks of May. For more information click here

Summer Requirements:

Each AP course at LHS has individual summer requirements. See each individual teacher’s syllabus and summer requirements.

AP Course Load and Withdraw Policy:

It is recommended that students do not take more than 3 AP courses per year. Students who select an AP course and choose to drop the course after June 1st will receive a WITHDRAW FAIL (WF) in the course for the year, and will be placed in an available course to fulfill graduation requirements. So be sure you wish to participate in the AP program at LHS. There are great benefits, but increased responsibilities

College Credit Plus (CCP)

The College Credit Plus program (CCP) offers qualified high school students onsite access to directly transcripted credit via dual credit. Students passing CCP classes will receive both high school and college credit for the course at no cost to families and without taking an exit exam. Students may enroll in college courses at their high school buildings or at local college campuses. Classes may be taught by college faculty or credentialed Logan High School Faculty.

Successful completion of coursework in the CCP program will earn students college credit that is accepted by all of Ohio’s public universities and colleges and many out-of-state and private institutions. Location, manner of delivery, and scheduling of courses may vary. These are not high school courses – these are college courses offered for concurrent high school credit. Parents and students should expect differences in process and plan accordingly.

  • Students must meet qualifying grade averages and ACT (or equivalent) scores to take CCP courses. As these are college courses, qualifications are set by the university or college awarding credit and vary between courses and programs.

  • Students are limited to thirty (30) credits of CCP-funded courses per year. Under the state law, local high school courses are part of that funding as well, with each one (1) high school credit course using three (3) CCP credits.
