The Logan High School Instrumental Music Department held their annual Band Banquet and Awards in the LHS Cafeteria and Theatre on Tuesday, May 16. The recipient of the John Philip Sousa Band Award was Ian Shields, son of Shawn and Karii Shields. “The John Philip Sousa Band Award is given in recognition of outstanding achievement and interest in instrumental music,” explained Pam Price, LHS Band Director. “For Singular merit in loyalty and cooperation, for displaying generally those qualities of conduct which school instrumental music strives to impart,” she stated. Recipient of the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award at Logan High School was James Bartolovich, son of Rachel and Lance Cairns. ”This award is in memory of jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong, and recognizes an outstanding musician in the Logan High School jazz program”. The award was presented by jazz band co-directors Ben Wright and Clarissa Bates. Emily Chaffin, daughter of Randy and Amanda Chaffin and Trinity Cade, daughter of Shane and Tara Cade, were presented with The Al Horsky Award. This award, established by former students and now retired Logan High School Band Director Jeff North and current Logan High School Band Director Pam Price is “for someone who displays only the best in musical excellence and attitude through hard work and dedication” which were traits of Horsky during his twenty year tenure as Logan High School Band Director. Recipients of the Harold R. (Big Smitty) Smith Award were Jordan Praither, daughter of Meisha Praither and Ally Wollenberg, daughter of Mark and Shannon Wollenberg. “This award represents pride toward the band, pride in self performance, leadership, desire for an outstanding group, responsibility and devotion,” Price explained. “This award reflects ‘Big Smitty’ in spirit, dedication, and exceptional enthusiasm,” the director explained. “Musical excellence, leadership, and dedication to the band program are the basis for this award.” Emilee Siders, daughter of Brent and Danielle Siders, and Grace Johnson, daughter of Henry and Heather Johnson, were the recipients of The Directors Award for Band. This award is for outstanding musicianship and contributions to the band program. Recipients of the Bill Miller Memorial Award were Rebekah Zirkle, daughter of Kelly and Beth Zirkle; and Cody Addington, son of Chris and Sue Addington. ”Exceptional enthusiasm, spirit, loyalty, desire, and interest in the instrumental music program of the Logan-Hocking Schools” are the qualities on which this award is based, and was presented by Tamara Miller-Keefe and Melodee Slane, daughters of the late Bill Miller. The recipients of the Outstanding Members of the Senior Band were Bailey Lape, daughter of Todd and Debbie Lape; and Josie Rimkus, daughter of Greg and Heidi Rimkus.
Ian Gallagan, son of Shawn and April Gallagan was honored as Outstanding Freshmen Member of Senior Band.
A new scholarship, the Jeanine Bentley Memorial Scholarship was established by Kenneth Bentley to further promote the advancement of Logan High School Graduates who are members of the High School Band and plan to further their education at a college or university in music education and/or performance. Jeanine was a staunch advocate of the Logan Instrumental Music Department and its rich traditions. She never missed a game, parade, concert or fall festival of bands performance. This year, Kenneth’s son Brian Bentley, presented Emily Chaffin, daughter of Randy and Amanda Chaffin, and Trinity Cade, daughter of Shane and Tara Cade with the inaugural scholarship. Chaffin will be majoring in Music Education at Ohio University this fall while Cade will be attending Marietta College this fall majoring in Music Education.
Chaffin also received the Barton Holl Scholarship. The Holl Scholarship is awarded each year to a student planning to pursue or currently pursuing a course of study in the area of music.
The Logan Alumni Band/Al Horsky Scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Music Education at Ohio University. The scholarship was awarded to 2022 LHS graduate Sarah Bentley, daughter of Brian and Rhonda Bentley, by Brenda Rowe, Logan Alumni Band President. Sarah will be a sophomore this fall at Ohio University majoring in Music Education and Bassoon Performance. A scholarship was established in 2017 by the Logan Band Boosters honoring retired Director of Bands, Jeffrey North, and is given to a graduating senior in the band attending college in any field. Emily Chaffin was the recipient of this scholarship that was presented by Mr. Jeff North A scholarship was established in 2021 honoring current director Pam Price. This scholarship is awarded to a senior member of the band enrolling in a two year or four year college in any subject field and has been a strong contributor in the band displaying musicianship, leadership and service. Mrs. Price presented senior Ian Shields, son of Shawn and Karii Shields, with this scholarship. Additional scholarships were able to be presented thanks to G&J Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. To be eligible for these scholarships, students must be entering a two or four year college in the fall and majoring in any field of their choice. They must have demonstrated dedication to the band program by performing in various band groups, volunteering to work at concession stands and the fair booth, as well as participating in fundraisers and other booster sponsored events. Students must also have demonstrated strong leadership skills both on and off the field and stage. The band boosters carefully reviewed all student applications and recipients were chosen. Those recipients are Trinity Cade, daughter of Shane and Tara Cade; Bailey Lape, daughter of Todd and Debbie Lape; Carly Leach, daughter of Corby and Kelly Leach; Grace Johnson, daughter of Henry and Heather Johnson; Jordan Praither, daughter of Meisha Praither; and Josie Rimkus, daughter of Greg and Heidi Rimkus.
Mason White and Amber Morgan were awarded a Certificate of Merit for their service as band librarians. Musicianship certificates were presented in recognition of outstanding musicianship and distinguished musical contributions. Recipients were Trinity Cade, Grace Johnson, Ian Shields, James Bartolovich, Rebekah Zirkle, Ally Wollenberg, Amber Morgan, Emrie Dickerson, Arabella Gordon, Kinsey Myers, Mason White, Emily Chaffin, Peyton Wallace, Jordan Praither, Cole Hoffman, Logan Keck, Alissa Ferri, Rozalin White, Bailey Lape, Reagan Cook, Emilee Siders, and Jonah McAfee. Mrs. Price noted that all of these students sit at the top of their sections and participate in all possible ensembles available to them. All freshmen members of the band received an “L” lyre patch, sophomore members received instrument pins, and junior members received lyre pins. All seniors in the band received statuettes and engraved ink pens.
