The Logan AFJROTC Chieftain Raiders held their own at the 2023 National All-Service Raider Competition. On 03 Nov the cadets traveled down to Fort Knox Kentucky to stay at Fort Knox Army Base. The cadets checked into the Army barracks, as well as explored the numerous static displays and college/technical careers booths available to them that evening. They started their Saturday at 0500 eating MREs for breakfast. Throughout the day, the two teams competed against nearly 2000 cadets from across the nation from all of the service JROTCs. It was one obstacle course after another for a total of 6 events. 1 - The physical team test is the team event to test strength, stamina, strategy, and endurance over approximately a half-mile using a variety of physical obstacles. 2 - Rope bridges will be constructed in accordance with TC 3-97.61, Military Mountaineering over Mill Creek which flows year-round. 3 - The Cross Country Rescue is “rescuing” a casualty with gear. The “rescue” course is one mile in length through wooded terrain with obstacles. 4 - Raider Gauntlet is a one-mile event through rolling terrain with numerous obstacles throughout the route 5 - The 5k team run 10-member teams will run as a team on a 5K route through rolling terrain. The course is on a path through woods that goes through varying terrain. 6 - The Ultimate Raider is a buddy run event that includes obstacles followed by a 2 mile race. The cadets did not finish running through obstacles until around 6pm that evening.
While we did not place for the event, the cadets performed very well and grew in strength, endurance, and comradery. Every obstacle, whether it was climbing a 12 foot wall, low-crawling through the dirt, or running through 40ft of 3ft deep water, the cadets had to continuously strategize, improvise, and conquer.
