Logan’s school district provides many forms of education and opportunities. Along with this education comes an essential factor in Logan's schooling community: safety. Their schools have many different resource officers that provide each school with much security. Logan High School’s resource officer, Officer Campbell, provides this school with plenty of protection and service.
During an interview, Officer Campbell revealed he desired to become a school resource officer to work with students rather than adults and accomplish his goal of leading kids down a better path than they had started. As Officer Campbell has served these past eight years, he has needed to fill unexpected roles since he first signed on.
A role he filled that did not fit his expectations was covering school events after work hours. He explains, “Covering the events after hours was unexpected, though I knew I would have some, but I covered a lot more than I figured I would.” Along with covering school-related events, he also brings up the unexpected role of counseling. Although Officer Campbell is not a certified counselor, he is open to talking with and advising students. In addition, he mentions this role was surprising due to the many changes that have been issued since he first began working at the school, and that may be different than the officers before him.
Typically, a day at his job starts early in the morning, almost an hour before school begins or before the first student arrives, due to his work at the police department in the morning. Officer Campbell spends most of his day talking with kids and supervising lunches to ensure students are respectful and safe. He reveals he sometimes gets into classrooms and supervises student learning on some days.
While detailing his day, he also revealed his favorite parts about his job. As a resource officer, he especially enjoyed instances when he knew he was impacting the Logan High School community. Whether helping a student with stress or mediating difficult situations, he feels grateful knowing he can impact these situations positively.
As a man of the law, some students believe he is only trying to get them into trouble, but Officer Campbell reveals, “I am only trying to help keep you out of trouble and correct your ways to help not get you in trouble with the school.” Faced with difficulties in his line of work, he still enjoys working with the kids, and he feels motivated on the job by knowing his efforts can keep the school and its students safe.
Throughout Logan High School, students feel great appreciation for Officer Campbell for what he does for them. One student, Katy Hastings, explains she feels grateful for him because he makes her feel safe while being in and learning at school.
Officer Campbell works hard daily to keep Logan High School safe and protected and hopefully improve each student's day.
