Macbeth

How do you make Macbeth interesting to teenagers?

Dress up and act it out, of course!  In Mrs. Pfarr and Mrs. Brooke’s class, they will resort to getting up in front of the class, in costume (with props in hand), and act out certain scenes, in order to keep their audience (20+ 15 and 16-year-olds) engaged.

However, it’s all in the name of education.

10th grade is an important grade in high school.  It’s the year that students have to take four end-of-course state tests to show their learning and proficiency in core classes, like English.  Learning Shakespeare, which is considered a 10th-grade text, while learning skills like annotating and critical thinking, is incredibly important for preparing for both the test and the real world.  Keeping the students interested in the text helps their comprehension and allows them to learn these skills without feeling like a chore.  Plus, it allows them to get through complex text, like Macbeth, without falling asleep at 8:30 in the morning.
