The Project Lead The Way program at Logan Hocking Middle school is taking off this year. During the 2022-2023 school year we had one teacher, Mrs. Shonborn, trained to teach two programs: Design and Modeling for 5th and 6th grades and Automation and Robotics for students in grade 7.
This 2023-24 school year, we have two more teachers PLTW trained: Mrs. Gallagan has been trained to teach the Design and Modeling classes this year. Mrs. Gallagan will be working with students on the Design process and then creating several different projects such as a foot orthosis, puzzle cube and then finally they are learning Stop-Motion.
"I think PLTW is a great curriculum that makes students think 'outside of the box'. It encourages students to go deeper into why things are made/created with a final outcome in mind, and gives them the drive to constantly regroup or rethink their ideas and designs. The students seem excited, which makes it easy to teach, even though some of the concepts might seem foreign at first". -- Mrs. Gallagan
Mrs. Gallagan’s students working on the foot orthosis:
Mrs. Shonborn continues to teach Automation and Robotics and in place of Design and Modeling, she is teaching students how to use Google Suites, Coding and Design and Creation with the 3-D printer, Cricut and Canva. Students are excited to begin designing and creating tumblers, t-shirts and other items. Mrs. Shonborn says, “her students are having a fun time with the builds, but when they finish their project and it runs on its own, that is when their eyes light up and I see the pride on their faces.” According to most students, they are having a good time in Mrs. Shonborn’s class and they like that it is more laid back and they are able to work with their hands.
Mrs. Shonborn’s 7th grade students working on Res-Q-Bots:
Mr. Garner has been PLTW trained to teach about Drones. Students are learning what a drone is, how it works, how to become certified to fly a drone and finally they will be able to fly a drone and even complete an obstacle course using the drones. “ It is going well, the kids are having fun and have learned a lot.”
Mr. Garner’s Drone class:
Students in 5th and 6th grade were given choices this year on which technology class they wanted to take. All three courses were in high demand.
