In preparation for the "In Times of War unit", Sergeant Thomas McLaughlin of the Army National Guard in Columbus came and spoke to 8th grade ELA classes about conflict management, effective listening, and resiliency from the perspective of the military. These foundational concepts show students how conflicts begin from similar places whether they are individual or international. Sergeant McLaughin is a 2012 Nelsonville-York graduate and was deployed in Kuwait and Iraq from 2019-2020. He now works at the Defense Supply Center in Columbus as a leadership trainer while finishing his IT degree.
