FAQ

How does having a Chromebook help my child’s education?

  • Integrating technology improves student enthusiasm toward learning, making students actively engaged in their classes and taking ownership in their learning.

  • Brain research has proven that students are now learning differently and need new instructional methods to meet their needs.

  • Our students will be taught how to be effective 21st Century Learners. This means they will be digitally literate, and use the four C’s (Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking) to be global citizens.

  • Technology will allow students to be active learners.

  • Student writing and production will increase dramatically. Students will be able to peer edit easily and more constructively, as well as globally. The focus on writing will become less of an 'exercise' and become more of a crucial method for sharing information or telling stories. The technology allows students to share their writing with vast and different audiences if they choose.

The Chromebook is “just a toy.” The Chromebook will replace......

  • Chromebooks will not replace teachers. Teachers will be focused on using multiple perspectives, evidences and source materials in the curriculum to increase students critical skills.

  • The technology provides an opportunity for students to engage in real world work that is done by numerous professionals such as: scientists, engineers, musicians, artists, filmmakers, and authors.

  • It is our obligation to utilize and increase the technical knowledge students will need in a 21st Century workforce.

  • 1 to 1 computing reduces all of the excuses for a lack of computer use and sends a definitive message that computers in education are not a fad.

    • Some teachers may need to rethink how their classes are structured and take advantage of district professional development opportunities.

Can we opt out of the program?

  • After the four year rollout process, all students in grades 7 - 12 will have a Chromebook,

  • No, you cannot opt out. The 1 to 1 program is being brought to the district to provide our students with the best education possible by giving them the ability to be an active participant in their learning.

  • We do not allow parents to exclude their child from using textbooks.

  • Students are required to use the Chromebook.

Why Chromebooks?

  • The Logan-Hocking School District uses GAFE (Google Apps for Education).  The pure integration of Chromebooks with GAFE makes for a seamless transition to student resources.

  • Chromebooks provide teaching and learning benefits of computers without the typical distractions that come with technology in the classroom.

  • They boot in 8 seconds and resume instantly – eliminating time wasted with

  • traditional computer startup and network connection.

  • Long battery life (8 - 8.5 hours) means Chromebooks last an entire school day. It’s easy to connect a Chromebook anytime and anywhere with built-in Wi-Fi.  Applications, school work, and settings are stored in the cloud.

  • There is no special training required: If you know how to use the web, you know how to use a Chromebook.

  • Chromebooks can seamlessly access the Google Apps suite, as well as other apps available in the Chrome Web Store.

  • Creates a “level playing field.”  All kids have the same device, eliminating the “haves and have nots.”

  • Low cost, instructional device that fits student and staff educational needs.

The cost of 1 to 1 is expensive. Where is the money coming from?

  • Monies from other areas are being allocated, such as: textbook purchases, shared computer labs, reduced print materials, student fees, software licenses, etc.

  • There will be a $40 dollar technology fee assessed for each year your student is assigned a device.

What if my child loses or damages his/her Chromebook?

  • We believe that LHSD students are well-prepared for the responsibility of working with Chromebook computers. All students and their parents will sign an acceptable use policy. The experiences of other school districts that have implemented a 1 to 1 computing program suggest that problems of lost, stolen, or broken hardware are minimal.

  • If the property is damaged, lost or stolen, you are responsible for the reasonable cost of repair or its fair market value on the date of loss. Loss or theft of the property must be reported to the District ASAP.  Seniors must clear all records and pay all fees before participating in graduation ceremonies.

  • We know that our students feel respected when we give them our trust, especially with things of such importance. We believe that our students are beyond competent and worthy of our trust.

  • Devices will be insured by the Logan-Hocking School District.

    • Students will have a deductible for each repair that is not covered by manufacturer's warranty.

    • The student’s family is responsible for the cost of the deductible.

    • $20.00 for the first claim, $40.00 for second claim, $60.00 for third claim, $80.00 for fourth claim, $100.00 for fifth claim, $120.00 for sixth claim.

Students are going to play games, look at inappropriate things, and not pay attention in class.

  • Some students may look at inappropriate things. This will be dealt with on an individual basis according to disciplinary actions in place at each school.

  • Classroom management of teachers will adjust to teaching with Chromebooks in their classrooms.

  • Students are required to complete their work or projects just as before the 1 to 1 initiative.  Students are still responsible for their choices.

  • Students will use their Chromebooks for purposeful work and projects as they empower themselves to take control of their learning.

  • Students and parents will sign a district acceptable use policy.
